Western Christian traditions mark Advent, the four-Sunday lead-up to Christmas — increasingly visible online as a 24-window Advent calendar (one window per day in December). The phrase "the twelve days of Christmas" refers to December 25 to January 5, ending on Twelfth Night before Epiphany. Boxing Day (December 26) is a separate public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and many Caribbean countries — its name comes from the historic practice of giving servants and tradespeople a "Christmas box" of gifts the day after Christmas.

A short history of December 25

December 25 wasn't always Christmas. The earliest Christian communities focused on Easter rather than the Nativity, and the celebration of Jesus's birth was added later. December 25 first appears as the Christmas date in the Roman calendar of 354 AD, possibly chosen because it coincides with the Roman winter solstice festival of Sol Invictus, or possibly because it places the Nativity nine months after the Annunciation on March 25, which was the older fixed date.

Either way, the December 25 date is now universal in the Gregorian-calendar Christian world. Eastern Orthodox churches that retain the Julian calendar celebrate on January 7, which is the same nominal date as December 25, just thirteen days behind in calendar drift.
