About

Apple's next iPhone keynote is expected on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on sale from Friday, September 18. Our countdown runs to 10:00 a.m. PT and updates the moment Apple publishes an official invitation.

When is the iPhone 18 launching? Expected release schedule

No date has been announced. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects the keynote on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The reasoning is calendar arithmetic rather than a leak: Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, and Apple has never held an iPhone event the day after that holiday, which rules out Tuesday, September 8. Apple told US retail staff applying to work the event only that it falls in the first half of September.

Pre-orders normally open on the Friday after the keynote. That Friday is September 11, 2026, the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, so Gurman expects Apple to shift pre-orders to Saturday, September 12, with general availability on Friday, September 18. If the event slips a week to September 14 or 15, pre-orders would move to September 18 and release to September 25. You can compute the exact days between the keynote and release date using our date difference tool.

Apple has sent its September invitation exactly 14 days before the keynote for four years running, which puts the announcement around August 25 or 26. Here is how the last three cycles ran, plus the expected 2026 timeline:

  • iPhone 17 Series: Invite Aug 26, 2025 | Announced Sept 9, 2025 | Released Sept 19, 2025
  • iPhone 16 Series: Invite Aug 26, 2024 | Announced Sept 9, 2024 | Released Sept 20, 2024
  • iPhone 15 Series: Invite Aug 29, 2023 | Announced Sept 12, 2023 | Released Sept 22, 2023
  • iPhone 18 Pro Series (expected, not confirmed): Keynote Sept 9, 2026 | Pre-orders Sept 12 | Release Sept 18, 2026

What Apple is actually launching in September (and what waits until 2027)

Apple is breaking its own pattern this cycle. Reporting from Bloomberg, MacRumors and 9to5Mac agrees that September 2026 covers only the expensive end of the range: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable, which several leakers say will be branded iPhone Ultra rather than iPhone Fold.

The standard iPhone 18, the cheaper iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air are held back to roughly March 2027. If you are counting down to a regular iPhone 18, you are counting down to spring, not to this September. Nikkei reports Apple has told suppliers to prepare at least five new iPhone models across the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027, which fits that split.

The foldable may also break away from the Pro schedule. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital and others report early production volumes are tight, and some reports suggest it could be announced in September but sold weeks later. Treat a same-day foldable release as unconfirmed.

Much like tracking major entertainment dates like our GTA VI countdown, high-demand flagship launches often experience early stock shortages and shipping delays.

The first iPhone keynote under Apple's new CEO

This part is not a rumour. Apple's newsroom announced on April 20, 2026 that Tim Cook becomes executive chairman and that John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, becomes chief executive effective September 1, 2026. Cook's last day in the role is August 31.

That puts the September event roughly a week into Ternus's tenure, making it the first iPhone launch presented under a new CEO since 2011. Cook is expected to step back from keynote appearances.

A20 Pro and TSMC 2nm: what is verified, and what is analyst forecast

Start with the primary source. TSMC states on its own 2nm technology page that N2 entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025. N2 is TSMC's first node built on gate-all-around nanosheet transistors instead of FinFET, which wraps the gate around the channel on all four sides and cuts leakage at low voltage.

TSMC's published design targets for N2, measured against its N3E node, are a 10 to 15 percent speed gain at the same power, or a 25 to 30 percent power reduction at the same speed, with roughly 15 percent higher transistor density on mixed logic, analog and SRAM designs (up to 20 percent for logic-only). Those are node targets from the foundry, not iPhone benchmark results. What a finished A20 Pro delivers depends on Apple's design choices, and Apple has published nothing.

Everything after this point is supply-chain reporting rather than confirmed fact. Analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities first reported that the Pro models and the foldable will use an A20-class chip on N2 with Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging, which places the SoC and DRAM side by side at wafer level and replaces the InFO packaging Apple has used for about a decade. Whether Apple uses base N2 or the newer N2P variant has not been established.

On capacity, Commercial Times and other Taiwanese outlets report Apple secured more than half of TSMC's 2026 N2 output, not all of it. Semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan reported in August 2026 that A20 Pro yields are healthy but DRAM supply is the bottleneck, with roughly a billion dollars of finished Apple dies sitting at TSMC waiting on memory chips before they can be packaged.

Display and Face ID: the leaks openly contradict each other

This is the messiest area of the rumour cycle, and pages that give you one clean answer are picking a side. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants has said the Pro models could move Face ID components under the display, but was explicit that this shrinks the Dynamic Island rather than eliminating it.

The Information reported in December 2025 that the front camera moves to the top-left of the screen and the pill disappears entirely. Weibo leaker Instant Digital pushed back in January 2026, arguing that only the infrared flood illuminator is simple enough to sit under the panel, while the dot projector, IR camera and selfie camera stay inside a smaller pill. Those two accounts cannot both be right.

Leaked CAD files and screen protectors point to a cutout somewhere between 25 and 35 percent smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro. The spread in that range is the spread between different leaks, not a measurement. Display sizes are expected to carry over unchanged. Apple has confirmed none of it.

Variable aperture camera: strong supply-chain signal, no published specs

Ming-Chi Kuo first reported in December 2024 that both Pro models would get a mechanical variable aperture on the main camera, a physical iris that opens and closes instead of the fixed f/1.78 lens carried from the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro. Gurman has described it as one of the more significant camera changes in years.

What raises this above a typical rumour is the component trail. Kuo named Sunny Optical as shutter supplier and Largan Precision as aperture lens supplier. Korea's ETNews later reported Sunny Optical had begun producing actuators, with LG Innotek installing dedicated equipment at its Gumi plant. Kuo estimates the module costs Apple around 50 percent more than the current one.

No aperture range has been published or credibly leaked. If you see a specific f/1.4 to f/4.0 figure quoted anywhere, including on Apple rumour sites, it is an illustration rather than a sourced spec. Components entering production also does not guarantee shipping: Apple considered variable aperture for the iPhone 17 Pro and cut it.

Pricing: what is known about costs, and what is guesswork

The cost pressure is documented. Apple raised Mac and iPad prices in June 2026, and Tim Cook said on the Q3 2026 earnings call that memory prices forced the decision, describing the market as a hundred-year flood. Apple historically absorbs component swings instead of passing them on, so that was a real shift in approach.

TrendForce estimates the iPhone 18 Pro's bill of materials will run close to 40 percent above the iPhone 17 Pro, with memory moving from roughly 10 percent of component cost a year ago to about 34 percent in Q3 2026. TrendForce also expects base storage to stay at 256GB rather than rise again.

Retail prices are forecasts only. Against the iPhone 17 Pro's $1,099 starting price, analysts and Chinese leakers have floated increases of $200 to $300, with 9to5Mac noting estimates near $1,399 while arguing $1,199 to $1,249 is more plausible. Foldable estimates run from $1,999 to $2,500. Nobody outside Apple knows, and the countdown page will carry the real figures within minutes of the keynote.

One practical note if you are planning to buy: with DRAM constrained and foldable volumes limited, several supply-chain reports expect pre-order sellouts and shipping estimates slipping into October. In the meantime, you can count down to any date you like on UNTL.

Frequently asked questions

When is the iPhone 18 coming out?
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with pre-orders around Saturday, September 12 and availability on Friday, September 18. Apple has not confirmed these dates, and the pre-order shift to Saturday reflects Bloomberg's expectation that Apple avoids September 11.
Is the standard iPhone 18 launching in September 2026?
No. Apple is splitting the generation. September 2026 is expected to cover the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and a second iPhone Air are reported for around March 2027.
Will the iPhone 18 Pro have a 2nm chip?
TSMC has confirmed that its N2 2nm process entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025. Supply-chain analysts including Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo report Apple's A20 Pro will be the first iPhone chip built on it, and that Apple booked more than half of TSMC's 2026 2nm capacity. Apple itself has confirmed nothing about the chip.
How much faster will the A20 Pro be?
There is no benchmark data, only TSMC's node targets. TSMC says N2 is designed for a 10 to 15 percent speed gain at the same power, or 25 to 30 percent lower power at the same speed, compared with its N3E process. Real-world gains depend on Apple's chip design and are unknown until the hardware ships.
Will the Dynamic Island disappear on the iPhone 18 Pro?
Reports disagree. Display analyst Ross Young expects a smaller pill rather than none, and leaked CAD renders and screen protectors suggest a cutout roughly 25 to 35 percent smaller. The Information has reported the pill disappears entirely with the camera moving to the top-left corner. Neither version is confirmed.
What aperture range will the variable aperture camera have?
Unknown. Ming-Chi Kuo reported a mechanical variable aperture for both Pro models and named Sunny Optical and Largan Precision as suppliers, and actuator production has reportedly begun. No credible source has published the f-stop range. The current Pro main camera is fixed at f/1.78.
How much will the iPhone 18 Pro cost?
Apple has not announced pricing. TrendForce estimates the build cost is close to 40 percent higher than the iPhone 17 Pro because of memory prices, and analysts forecast a $200 to $300 increase over the iPhone 17 Pro's $1,099 starting price. Forecasts for the foldable range from $1,999 to $2,500.
When will Apple confirm the event date?
Apple has published its September invitation exactly 14 days before the keynote every year since 2022. For a September 9 event that points to an announcement around August 25 or 26, 2026, posted to apple.com/apple-events.
