How "this Thursday" rolls

Etymology and the planetary week

Thursday is named for Thor, the Norse god of thunder — a translation of the Latin dies Iovis, "day of Jupiter". Jupiter the planet is associated with thunder via its mythological role, so the substitution made sense to medieval Germanic translators. Romance languages preserve the planet: Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Italian giovedì.

The week itself is older than either tradition — the seven-day cycle, tied to the seven classical "planets" (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), spread from Mesopotamia into Greek, Roman, and eventually Christian and Islamic timekeeping. The modern Monday-to-Sunday order is essentially the planetary order, rotated.
