This Wednesday vs. next Wednesday

Both phrasings appear in search; both mean different things. "This Wednesday" is the imminent occurrence (could be today). "Next Wednesday" is the following one — strictly seven days later. The segmented control above lets you switch. We treat "this Wednesday" the way most people speak it: if it's already past the target time today, we roll the count forward.

Wednesday across languages

Wednesday is named for Woden (Odin in Old Norse), translating the Latin dies Mercurii ("day of Mercury"). Romance languages keep the Mercury connection — Spanish miércoles, French mercredi, Italian mercoledì. The Germanic split is also visible in modern German, where Wednesday is Mittwoch ("midweek"), bypassing both the god and the planet to land directly on the geometric meaning we opened this page with.

The English name's awkward spelling — silent d, the unexpected n — is one of the most-misspelled days in English. Even a confident writer often pauses on it.
